It has the sound of a football team.
The Canberra Raiders’ water purifying system is a mix of Australian and New Zealand, with a few local players also playing.
They use a mixture of salt water and seawater to purify the water in the stadium.
“It’s really quite a sophisticated thing, and you can see it in the water that we use,” Raiders coach Ricky Stuart said.
“But you also see the guys that play in it, they’re very clean, they have no stains, they are very organised and they are always looking after each other.”
When we first started out we used to play games in our gymnasium, and then we moved on to playing at the stadium and then playing at a community event.
“Then we moved to the field and now we use the water, so we are using the water at the training ground and that’s a lot of different things to do.”
The players play in the field for about 15 minutes every day.
“They’re very organised, very professional, they know what they are doing and they understand that they need to keep themselves hydrated, which they do,” Stuart said of the players.
“The biggest thing is to keep the players hydrated and hydrate them properly so they’re able to play and train and be fit.”
The Raiders’ players are very efficient in their water purifications.
“We’ve got about 300 to 400 litres of water per day, and that is enough for all the players,” Raiders chief medical officer Paul McArthur said.”[We] have to put the water into a water bottle, which is really good, but there are so many different things that we need to do to keep that water in our body.”
Dr McArthur is working with the Australian Water Protection Association to improve the quality of water that the Raiders and other players get.
“As a team we do water conservation every day and we’re actually working towards improving the quality, because the water quality in the game is getting worse,” he said.
Dr McArdons water purifies water for all players.
It’s a water purifier for the team, and it is a water conservation project that the Australian Rugby Union and the Raiders are working together on.
“I’m really proud of the work that the players are doing, but what I’m also proud of is that we are able to provide them with the water to do that work, and the other things that they have to do in order to get through their games,” Dr McArthur explained.
Dr Stuart said the players get water from their parents.
“Their parents are really great, they give them the water,” he explained.
“And we don’t have to buy water from them, we have water from the water supply.”
The water from his parents is filtered and pumped back into the players’ tanks, but Dr Stuart said he doesn’t mind sharing his water supply with his players.
He said the Raiders would have been in a much better position to win a premiership if they had more players in the squad.
“If we had had a lot more of our players we would have got more of the premiership,” he replied.
“So I would say it’s probably not a bad thing that we’ve got a lot less of our current players in there.”
