The U.S. Department of Transportation is working on a new vehicle charging station that will be a giant battery.
The new battery, called Electra, will charge your electric vehicle while you drive, and it will also charge your home battery.
It will be installed in about half a million vehicles across the country by 2020.
This is great news, as we’ve talked about in the past, but if you’re worried about pollution in the vehicle, you might want to stop worrying.
“Electric vehicles have a lot of clean-energy potential, but the problem is that they’re so expensive,” says Brian Shaffner, a researcher at the Center for Transportation Research and Education at the University of Illinois.
“We have to look at other ways to make that electric drive as inexpensive as possible.”
Shaffer and his colleagues are currently working on an “infrastructure-as-a-service” model for the Electra battery that will enable consumers to charge their vehicles in their homes.
They’ve already tested the system with a couple of hundred vehicles, and they’re planning to extend the tests to 500,000 vehicles.
Electra will be able to charge your vehicle up to 80 percent in a couple hours, depending on how much battery power is used.
The battery will be the size of a laptop, and its size will be much smaller than a typical electric vehicle battery.
“It will be smaller than the batteries in an electric vehicle,” Shaffers says.
Shaff’s group has already worked with several automakers on a similar battery that can be installed on the inside of your vehicle.
That project has been approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which is also looking into how to reduce the cost of charging electric vehicles.
Shafer says that the batteries would be built at a plant in Tennessee and that the company could expect to get the batteries to market by 2021.
“There’s no reason to think that this won’t be the standard by 2020,” he says.
Electric vehicles are now the most popular vehicle on the road, and Shaff says the technology could be the basis for future vehicles like the Chevrolet Bolt, Tesla Model 3, and Ford Fusion.
The big question, however, is what happens when people start charging their cars with batteries like this.
The National Highway Transportation Safety Administration is currently investigating how to ensure that electric vehicles have enough range and charging capacity to be used on a daily basis.
Shafner says that while the technology will eventually allow electric vehicles to be charged in any environment, the goal is to provide the infrastructure that will allow that technology to be a reality.
“What we’re doing is going to put a whole bunch of batteries together and make them self-sufficient so that they can do it on their own,” he said.
“In a couple years, we’ll have a fully functional charging station, and you’ll be able charge your car in your home and not have to go to a charging station to do that.”
It’s important to remember that EVs can only be charged by a battery that has a capacity of 10 kilowatts or greater, which makes EVs very expensive to buy.
Shaffer says that with enough energy storage, EVs could become very cheap to run.
“If you think about it, the price of electricity is going up in price and the price for energy is going down,” he told me.
“So if you have a battery capacity of 20 kilowatt or less, that will cost $10 a kilowat or $5 a kilawat.”
He expects that by 2020, electric vehicles could cost less than $10 per kilowater.
In other words, if you buy a Prius, a Prizm, or a Nissan Leaf, you’re saving about $1,500 per year.
Shattner says the Electrum system is “the future of electrification,” but the next steps are important.
“I’m not saying it’s going to be the only way to do this, but I think that it’s the right path,” he explains.
“This is going out there to solve a problem, and if it solves a problem that it is solving today, then we should be very happy.”
The battery is part of a battery-powered car.
Electrum is also the name for a project that Shaff is working with to build an electric charging station in the United Kingdom.
“The U.K. is going through a crisis in battery storage,” Shafer told me, “so it’s really important that we have an electric system that can power all the homes in the country.”
Electric cars have a ton of potential, especially in the U.T. There’s a lot that electric cars can do to lower our reliance on fossil fuels, and electric vehicles can be very cost-effective for certain types of transportation.
“One thing that’s going on with electric cars is that there are many different types of electric vehicles,” Shaffer said.
